Ex Service Man Store

If you walk through B1C in Janakpuri, you will find Ex Service Man Store at 4A. The store has been here for a while and the name comes from the fact that we have a background in the service. We keep things pretty orderly inside, though it’s a small space. We sell various everyday items that people in the neighborhood need. The shelves are wooden and I built a few of them myself back when we first moved in. There is a small bench outside where some of the older men from the block sit and talk in the evenings. I usually spend my time sitting behind the small wooden table that acts as a counter. We don't have any flashy advertisements or bright lights. The walls are a plain off-white color and there are a few photos of family and old friends pinned up near the calendar. People come in for their daily bits and pieces, and we usually know what they want before they even ask. It is a quiet atmosphere for the most part, except when the school nearby lets out and the kids run past. We keep a ledger to write down everything we sell by hand. It feels better to do it that way. The shop is our main focus every day from dawn until about eight at night. We just try to keep the shelves full and the floor clean.
