Our spot is 2/9-2, Andi Kadu, right near the Andi Kadu bus stop in Anangur. It’s a bit out of the main way in Kumarapalayam, but being by the bus stop makes it easier for people to find us. We work on fabrics here. It’s a quiet enough area until the machines start up in the morning. We have a small crew and most of us have been in this trade for years. The building is simple, nothing fancy to look at from the outside. We spend the day watching the looms and making sure the fabric is coming out the way it’s supposed to. Being near the bus stop means there’s always people walking by and a bit of activity. We usually keep the doors open for the breeze, though it gets dusty. We handle the local orders mostly. There’s a lot of manual checking involved in the work. You have to look closely at the weave to see if there’s a slip or a broken thread. We don’t use any big words for what we do, we just make fabric. Sometimes the yarn we get is a bit difficult, so we have to adjust the machines. It takes a lot of patience to get it right. We have a small shed for the extra materials. Usually, we just finish our work and head home when the sun goes down. It’s a basic life, but it keeps us busy.
