Gokul Knit Fashion

Our workshop is at 275/5 on Ganapathipalayam Road in the Veerapondi area. It’s a bit of a drive out from the city, but it’s where we’ve set up shop. We focus on knitwear, so the sound of the machines is pretty much the soundtrack to our lives. It’s a loud place when everything is running at once. We have a few big rooms for the different stages of making the clothes. The area around us is growing, with more buildings going up every year. It used to be much quieter. We have a small yard where the trucks pull in to load up. The dust from the road can be a bit of a nuisance, but we keep the doors shut when it gets bad. We don't have a big front office or anything like that. If you walk in, you’re pretty much right there where the work is happening. Most of the people working here live nearby, so they walk or bike in. We drink a lot of water and tea throughout the day to keep going. It’s honest work and we don't try to make it sound like more than it is. We just make the knits and send them off to wherever they’re supposed to go. Sometimes the machines break down and we have to fix them ourselves, which takes time, but that is just part of the job. It is a long day but we feel good when the work is finished.
