Assisi Garments

Assisi Garments is out in Kulathupalayam. We get our mail at the Palangarai Post Office in Avinashi. It is a bit of a drive to get out here, but it's where we’ve always been. The air is a little clearer than in the middle of the city. Our building is a simple structure. We have a lot of local people from the village coming in to work every morning. They usually come by cycle or walk through the fields. Inside, we have long tables where the fabric is laid out for cutting. It gets loud once all the sewing machines start up at once. We don't have a fancy reception area. If someone comes by, they usually just walk right into the work area and ask for whoever they need. We keep things organized as much as we can, but with so many pieces of cloth moving around, it’s a constant challenge. There is a small shed near the side where we keep the scraps and waste. Sometimes the rain hits the metal roof so hard we can barely hear each other talk over the din. We just keep sewing. It’s steady work and it keeps everyone busy. We aren't trying to be anything we aren't. Just a group of people making clothes in a quiet part of town. Most of us have been here since the beginning and we know the routine by heart.
