Our yard is out in Shambhupura. It’s a large district and having all that open space is helpful when the big trucks come through. The ground is mostly dirt and the fine dust gets into everything, even the drawers in our office cabinets. We have been at this location for a long time now. The sun gets incredibly hot during the middle of the day, so we usually find ourselves huddled under the corrugated metal roof to stay cool. Most of the people working here live in the nearby area, so we all know each other’s families. It is never really a quiet place because of the machinery and the sound of heavy bags being dropped. We don’t use computers for every little thing, so there are still plenty of paper notebooks filled with scribbled notes and tallies. The tea we drink is always way too sweet, but it gives us a bit of energy. When the wind picks up from the north, you can smell the dust from the other industrial plants nearby. We wear old clothes because there’s no point in trying to stay clean while doing this lifting. Your back definitely feels the weight of the work by the end of the week. There is a small dhaba down the road where we grab some lunch. Shambhupura is changing with some new roads being built, but our little yard stays the same as it was when we first started.
