Chennai Fish Market

If you head down to Kasimedu in Royapuram, you will find us right there at the fish market. It’s not a quiet place at all. In fact, it's one of the loudest spots in Chennai, especially very early in the morning when the boats start coming back in. Chennai Fish Market is basically a bunch of us handling the daily catch and getting it ready for people to buy. Everything is covered in ice and the floor is always wet, so you have to watch your step when you walk around. We don't have a fancy office or air conditioning; it's just the stalls and the crates. You can smell the salt and the fish from a long way off. We spend our mornings sorting through different kinds of fish and prawns, making sure things are fresh before they go out. It’s hard work and your hands get pretty cold from the ice, but it’s what we do. People from all over the city come to Kasimedu because it's where the real action is. We've been in Royapuram for a long time and we know the sea pretty well. We don't use any fancy sales talk because the fish speaks for itself. It’s just a busy, messy, honest place where we work hard every day to get the catch sold. By the time most people are waking up, we've already been working for hours down here.
