If you know the Mettukuppam-Koyambedu area, you probably know Nerkundram Road. We are at number 69. It’s a busy spot, especially with the market nearby. The traffic can be a bit of a headache during the morning rush, but we are used to it by now. The school building has been standing here for quite some time. It’s got several floors and plenty of windows to catch whatever breeze comes through Chennai. We start early, usually before the heat gets too bad. The kids bring their tiffin boxes and sit together during the lunch breaks. We have a small area for assembly and some sports. It’s a local school, so most of the students live just a few streets away. You see them walking in groups with their heavy bags every morning. We try to keep things organized, but with hundreds of children, it’s always a bit loud. That’s just the way it is in a school. Teachers are busy with their notebooks and chalk all day. We don’t have much in the way of luxury, just the essentials for learning. The walls have some charts and drawings made by the students themselves. Sometimes we have to deal with power cuts or leaky taps, but we fix them as they happen. It’s a practical place for practical people. We focus on the books and the exams because that’s what the parents expect from us here in Mettukuppam. It’s just a lot of routine.
