Government School Anganawadi Kendra

The Anganawadi Kendra is located at number 152 on the busy Poonamallee High Road in Thiruverkadu. It is a small place tucked into the Vellappanchavidi area of Chennai. Because we are right on the high road, there is always a lot of noise from the cars and lorries passing by outside. The building is quite small, but we make use of every bit of space we have for the children. Most of the little ones come from the streets just behind the main road. We start early in the morning, and the room is quickly filled with the sound of kids playing or eating their mid-day meals. The walls are covered in some old posters and drawings the children made. We have a small kitchen area where the food is prepared every day, and the smell of rice and lentils usually fills the air by noon. It gets quite warm in the small space, so we keep the door open to let some air in from the porch. The floor is easy to clean, which is good because things often get messy during lunch. Parents usually stop by the gate in the evening to pick up their kids on their way back from work. It’s a simple setup meant to look after the neighborhood children, and we just keep things running as best as we can.
