Government Middle School

You can find our school at number 1 on Nalliah Naidu Street in Nammalwarpet. It’s a government middle school, right in the heart of a very old part of Chennai. The 600010 area is always bustling with people and shops, so there’s a lot of life right outside our doors. The building itself shows its age, but it’s sturdy enough for the hundreds of kids who come through every day. Our classrooms are a bit small and the corridors can get crowded when the bell rings. We have the usual blackboards and wooden desks that have been around for years. The teachers here are mostly from this part of town, so they know the families well. We don't have a big sports field, so physical education happens in the small open space we have. It’s often very humid, so everyone stays close to the windows. The morning assembly is held in the main courtyard and it’s always a bit of a squeeze. We focus on the regular subjects like science and social studies. There’s no fancy tech here, just books and a lot of talking. Lunchtime is always the busiest part of the day when the food is served. It’s a very local atmosphere where everyone knows everyone else. We just try to keep the kids focused and make sure they learn what they need to. It’s a plain, honest kind of school.
