Don Bosco Matriculation Higher Secondary School is tucked away at 13, Casa Major Rd in Egmore. It’s a busy corner of the city, especially near Sulaiman Zackria Avenue. The building looks quite traditional with its tall windows and heavy doors. In the mornings, the street gets narrow with all the rickshaws and cars dropping people off. You can hear the city waking up long before the first bell. We keep the gate open just wide enough for everyone to squeeze through. The playground isn't massive, but it does the job when the sun isn't too hot. We have some old trees that drop leaves everywhere, so there is always someone sweeping up. Inside, the ceilings are high, which helps when the heat gets bad in May. We don’t have fancy air conditioning in every room, just the usual ceiling fans that click as they spin. The staff room is small and packed with shelves of old registers. We do our own filing and keep track of everything on paper mostly. Sometimes the plumbing acts up, or a lightbulb flickers out in the back corridor, and we just fix it when we can. It’s a place that feels lived in. There’s no polished marble here, just concrete and paint that’s been touched up a few times. It’s a steady routine of lessons and lunch breaks, day after day, right here in the heart of Egmore.
