You can find Thanco Natural Ice Cream at Mathikere 1052/20. This shop has been here for a bit, and it’s a good spot for the students from the colleges nearby. They come in groups and stay for a long time, talking and laughing. We don’t mind, as long as there’s space for other people to walk in. The freezers hum all day and night, which is a sound you eventually stop hearing after working here for a few weeks. Sometimes a freezer acts up and we have to move everything quickly so nothing melts. That’s always a stressful hour. We get the fruit delivered in crates, and sometimes the mangoes are better one week than the next, but that’s just how nature works. We don't use a lot of bright lights or loud music. It’s just a clean, simple shop with a few pictures on the wall that have been there since the first day. The floor is tiled and easy to mop, which is good because people drop things more often than you’d think. Our aprons usually have a few stains on them by the evening. We aren't trying to be the biggest shop in Mathikere, just a place where you can get something cold when it’s hot outside. Dealing with the sugar and the cold can make your hands feel sticky and numb at the same time. It’s a quiet kind of work compared to the big restaurants.
