Swathi Sweets is right here in Maruthi Seva Nagar, at M S Nagar 2. It’s a neighborhood shop through and through. We know most of our customers by their first names. We see their kids growing up. It’s a nice feeling. We make all the traditional sweets right here in the back room. It gets very hot when the big vats of milk are boiling. I’ve burnt my hand more times than I can count. We don't use any fancy machines. Everything is done by hand, the old way. The shelves are usually packed with boxes ready for the festival seasons. Those are our busiest times. We barely sleep during Diwali. The rest of the year is a bit more relaxed. We have a few benches outside where the old men sit and talk for hours. They don't always buy something, but we don't mind. They are part of the scenery. The shop isn't very modern. We still use an old physical ledger for some of our accounts. It's just easier for me to write it down. We don't have a big marketing budget or a PR person. We just rely on the fact that people like what we make. Sometimes we run out of the special milk cake by noon. If that happens, we just tell people to come back tomorrow. We don't try to be something we’re not. We are just a local sweet shop and that’s plenty for us.
