Working out of Yard 9 in the APMC Submarket at Huskur Gate is always a bit chaotic. Being near Electronic City on Hosur Road means there are always trucks moving and people shouting. We get here very early, usually when it’s still dark and the air is cold. The crates of fruit come in from the farms and we have to sort through them immediately. Some days the bananas are perfectly green and other times they are already turning yellow. Moving quickly is necessary to get everything arranged before the heat starts. It’s a lot of heavy lifting. My back usually aches by noon. The yard is a messy place with crushed crates and bits of straw everywhere. We don't really have a front office. It's just the storage space and a small area where we stand to talk to buyers. We deal with a lot of small vendors who come to buy stock for their carts. The smell of ripening mangoes or oranges can be very strong depending on the season. We keep a ledger to track who owes what, and sometimes the pages get a bit stained with fruit juice. It’s a loud environment with people bargaining all the time. We drink a lot of tea from the stall nearby just to stay awake. When the sun goes down, we start cleaning up the empty space for the next batch of deliveries tomorrow.
