Sarswathi Ratnakar Book Depot has its home at No. 618 in Rajeshwari Market. We are right on Avenue Road, which everyone knows is the place to go if you need books in this city. We’re pretty close to the Rice Memorial Church, which is a good landmark for people who aren't familiar with the market layout. The shop itself is packed from floor to ceiling with all kinds of stuff. Sometimes I think the books are the only thing holding the walls up. It’s a bit of a maze inside, but we know where the different sections are. We get all sorts of people coming in—students, teachers, and just folks who like to read a good story. Avenue Road is always loud with traffic and people shouting, but once you step inside, it’s a bit quieter, even with all the clutter on the floor. We don’t really do much in the way of fancy displays or window shopping. We just put the books where they fit. We’ve been in the book trade for a long time, and we’ve seen the way people buy books change, but we keep doing things the old way. It’s a small family business, and we don’t have a lot of extra help. Usually, it’s just one or two of us handling everything from the stock to the cash. It’s a lot of work, but we like being part of the market community and seeing familiar faces. That’s how we’ve always done it.
