Gowri Books

We are tucked away in the Chandra Building on Avenue Road. If you know the area, you know how busy it gets around here with the traffic and the noise from the street. We’re right next to Adigas Hotel, so there is usually a smell of coffee or breakfast in the air every morning when we open up Gowri Books. The shop isn't fancy. There are stacks of books everywhere and sometimes it’s hard to keep up with the dusting. We spend a lot of our day just moving things around and making sure everything is where it should be on the shelves. It gets a bit cramped in Chickpet, but that is just how the neighborhood is. Most days start with us unlocking the metal shutter and checking what came in the day before. We don’t have a big staff, just a few of us making sure things run okay. The light inside the building can be a bit dim depending on the time of day, but we have enough lamps to see by. Sometimes we lose track of time just organizing the different sections. It's mostly just a routine of handling the books and talking to the regulars who stop by after their meal at the hotel. We’ve been at this address for a while now and the walls show it. It’s a practical place for people who just want to find something to read or look through the stacks without much fuss.
