Lal Sweets is a small shop at Hulimavu 29. If you walk past, you can usually smell the sugar and the milk being boiled down in the big vats we keep in the back. We have a glass counter at the front that we have to wipe down about a hundred times a day because of the fingerprints. It’s a family-run business, so there’s always someone related to me standing behind the counter or working the stove. We don't have a big air conditioner, just a couple of ceiling fans that spin fast and keep the air moving. The floor is tiled, and some of the tiles are a bit chipped from moving the heavy milk cans around. We start our work early because the sweets take a long time to cool down and set properly. We don't use any fancy packaging, just the standard boxes and bags that everyone else uses. People from the neighborhood come in for their favorites, and we usually know what they want before they even say it. Sometimes we have a bit of a line out the door during the holidays, and it gets a bit hectic. We just try to keep our heads down and serve everyone as fast as we can. We’ve been at this for a while now, and we don't plan on changing much. We like the way things are, even if it's a bit of a struggle sometimes to get everything done before we close up for the night.
