Our workplace is located at Shed No Ts 2/2 in the Industrial Estate right here in Balasore. We are a bit different from the farming groups because we focus on the agarbatti business instead. Most of the people working here are involved in the perfuming and the packaging side of things. It is always a busy place, and the air usually smells quite strong of whatever incense we happen to be working on that particular day. We are not some big, fancy factory with a lot of rules; it is more of a community-run shed where local people come to earn a living. We take the raw sticks and make sure they are scented correctly and then we get them packed up into boxes to be sent out to the shops. It is steady work and it keeps a lot of us busy from Monday to Saturday. We chose the name Jeevika because it really is how we make our living. There is absolutely nothing corporate about how we run this place. We just have our long tables set up and we get to work as soon as we arrive in the morning. Sometimes the machines act up or we run out of the right packaging materials, but we just figure it out and keep going. It is a practical setup in the industrial estate, and we try to keep things moving as best as we can every day. It’s a lot of manual work but it keeps the lights on.
