Somalpur is a bit quieter than the main parts of Ajmer, and that’s where you’ll find Gurukul The School. It’s a plain building with a lot of activity inside. We spend most of our mornings getting the registers signed and making sure all the kids have their uniforms on right. The teachers here are mostly from the surrounding neighborhoods. We don’t have much time for fancy speeches or long meetings. We just get into the classrooms and start the lessons. There’s a lot of talking, a lot of questioning, and sometimes a lot of laughing. The playground is mostly dirt, but it serves its purpose for football or just running around. We keep a few potted plants near the entrance to make it look a bit more welcoming. During the summer, the ceiling fans hum all day long. It gets quite warm, so we try to keep the kids inside during the peak heat. We handle everything ourselves, from fixing a broken chair to organizing the annual day. It’s a lot of work for a small staff, but we manage. People in Somalpur know us as the local school where kids go to study. We don’t try to be something we aren't. We just provide a place for the children to gather and get their education. It’s honest work and it keeps us busy from Monday to Saturday every single week of the year without much fuss from anyone.
