Shreenathji Marble

Our place, Shreenathji Marble, sits right by the Gota railway crossing, near Meldi Estate. If you know Gota Gam, you know how busy this crossing gets. We’ve had this spot for a long time. It’s not a complicated business. We get trucks in, we unload the marble, and we wait for people to come by and take a look. Usually, it’s locals from the neighborhood or someone doing up a small house nearby. The yard is full of different stacks of stone. Sometimes the inventory changes fast, and other times certain slabs sit there for months waiting for the right person. Working here means getting used to the noise of the trains passing by all day. It’s a bit loud, but you stop noticing after the first week. We don’t have a lot of office staff or anything like that. It’s mostly just us handling the heavy lifting and showing people the colors we have in stock. The stone comes in big blocks or pre-cut slabs, and we just arrange them so they’re easy to see. We try to be honest about what’s a good cut and what might have a small crack or a weird vein in it. That’s just how natural stone is, you never get two pieces exactly the same. It’s a straightforward way to make a living. We open early and stay until the sun starts to go down. It's a lot of work but it is what we do.
