At J C Birla & Sons, we are tucked away at A/112 on the first floor of the Shoe Market. It is a busy place, especially since we are so close to Anand Cloth Market in Sarangpur. Most days, the hallway outside is packed with people moving bundles of fabric or searching for different shops. Up here on the first floor, it stays a bit quieter than the ground level, but you can still hear the shouting and the horns from the street below. The space is filled with stacks of boxes that reach almost to the ceiling. We spend a lot of time just moving things around to find what we need. It is not a very large office, but it works for what we do. My family has been around this area for a long time, so we know most of the people in the neighboring blocks. We start the day early, usually before the heat really kicks in. The fans in the ceiling hum all day, trying to keep the air moving. Sometimes the lift doesn't work, so we end up carrying everything up the stairs, which is quite a workout. We don't have a big staff, just a few of us who have been here for years. We keep the books manually mostly, sitting at the old wooden desk near the front door. It’s a simple setup, but it’s ours and we’re used to the way things work in this part of town.
