Shop number 22 on Ambabi Road is where we spend all our time. If you’re heading through Bhaktapur in Idar, you’ll find us easily enough. It’s a small shop, but we pack a lot into it. Dealing with cement in Sabarkantha means you’re always fighting the heat and the wind. We mostly sit out front when it isn’t too busy, watching the traffic go by on the road. People stop in asking for a few bags here and there for a wall or a floor. We don’t do anything too complicated. It’s just us and the inventory. Sometimes the deliveries arrive late, which is a bit of a headache, but we manage. The floor is always dusty, no matter how much we sweep it. That’s just the nature of the business, I suppose. We’ve got a regular rhythm to the day. Open up early, get some tea, and wait for the first customer. Most of the people who come here are from around Idar, so we recognize a lot of faces. It’s not like those big corporate places you see in the cities. It’s just a shop. We keep the cement dry and help people load it into their trucks or carts. It’s simple work, but it keeps us busy enough throughout the week. You get used to the smell of the bags after a few years.
