You can find Nikhil Footwears Ltd at G-11 in Udyog Nagar, right off Rohtak Road. This is an industrial area, so it is mostly warehouses and factories like ours. We make footwear, and that means the sound of cutting machines and stitching is what you hear all day long. The smell of rubber and glue is something you just get used to after a few days of working here. We have different sections for the soles and the uppers. It is a lot of manual labor, and the workers are usually busy at their stations from the moment the lights go on. We don't have much in the way of air conditioning, so the fans are always spinning fast to keep us cool. The floors are concrete and we have racks of shoes waiting to be boxed up and sent out. Rohtak Road can be a nightmare with the trucks and the dust, but it is where we have been for a long time. We aren't trying to be the biggest factory out there. We just want to make shoes that people can actually wear without them falling apart after a few miles. Most of us have been working in this industry for our whole lives. We know how a shoe should feel and how it should be put together properly. It is simple, hard work, and we don't make it out to be anything more than that. We have some tea when the afternoon slump hits and then get back to the machines until it is time to go.
