Mahakavi Matriculation Higher Secondary School is out in Villupuram, right on the Salem Ulundurpettai Highway, which is NH-68. The address covers a few different local names like Rayappanur, Vasudevanur, and Chinnasalem, but we are all in the 606201 area. Because we are near the highway, there is always the sound of trucks and cars passing by at high speeds. It’s a large campus because we have both matriculation and higher secondary levels here. The buildings are painted in simple colors and the grounds are wide. We have to do a lot of sweeping because the wind from the open highway blows a lot of dirt into the corridors. It’s a very local place where students from all the nearby villages come to study. You’ll see bicycles parked in long rows and school buses lined up near the main gate. The office is usually busy with teachers sorting out lesson plans or students waiting to talk to the principal. We don't have any of those polished brochures you see in big cities. We just have our classrooms and our staff who have been here for years. Life revolves around the school bell and the seasons of the highway traffic.
