Shalmala Organic Farmer Producer Company Limited is run out of a place in Hirehalli, Chigalli, which is over in Mundgod. We are set up at Shridhar Hegde’s place, and it is a very rural kind of setup. Being in the Mundgod area means we are surrounded by greenery and a lot of traditional farming. We decided to focus on organic stuff because that is what many of us were doing anyway on our own plots. It is a bit of a trek to get out here if you are not from around the village, but the air is clean and the pace is slow. We do not have any fancy signs or a big staff. It is usually just a few of us sitting around a wooden table, going over the numbers and talking about the rain. Sometimes we have meetings under the shade of the trees because it is cooler than being inside the house. We have to deal with the same problems every farmer has, like bugs and bad weather, but we do it together now. Chigalli is a quiet spot, and we like that our work stays close to the ground. It is not about making a huge name for ourselves, just making sure the organic crops from our area get where they need to go. It is simple work for simple people.
