Garden Vani is sitting over in Gaytri Nagar, right in Sector-5. If you know this part of Udaipur, you know it's a mix of houses and small shops. We started this because there was a gap in the corner here. Every morning, the first thing is to haul the chairs out and get the water boiling. It’s usually quiet for the first hour, then people start moving around the neighborhood. We don't have a big fancy sign or anything, just the name so people know where they are. The floor gets swept three or four times a day because people bring in sand on their shoes. It’s a small operation, mostly just a couple of us working the floor and the kitchen. We spend a lot of time talking to the regulars who live just a few streets away. Sometimes the supply truck is late and we have to wait around, but that’s just how things go here. The lighting inside is a bit bright, but it helps when the sun goes down early. We don't have any of those modern decorations you see in the city center. It’s just walls, some pictures, and places for people to sit down and eat. We try to keep things moving, but if it gets busy, you might have to wait a few minutes for a chair. We just do the work and go home when the gates shut.
