Our spot is in Palachira, which is a bit away from the main noise of Varkala. We call the place Thushara, and that is where we run West Oceanic Resorts. It says 'Private Limited' on the registration, but it's really just a few of us. Being so close to the ocean is great, but the salt air eats through everything, so we are always painting or fixing things. We don't have a big fancy lobby with air conditioning. It’s more of a place where you can feel the sea breeze coming through the windows. We grew up around these cliffs and beaches, so we know the area like the back of our hands. We don't have any mission statements or corporate slogans hanging on the walls. We just try to be decent people and keep the rooms ready for whoever shows up. Sometimes we just sit out and watch the sunset after a long day of cleaning and maintenance. It is a slow way of doing business, but it suits the atmosphere of Varkala. We don't have a big marketing team, so we just rely on people finding us by word of mouth. It’s a modest place in a quiet part of town, and we like it that way. Most of our days are spent checking on the rooms or talking with the neighbors about what is happening in Palachira. We don't want to be anything more than what we are.
