Shri K.G.S. High School

Kharaghoda is a unique place in Surendra Nagar because of all the salt work nearby. Our high school is right in the middle of this landscape. The ground around here can get quite white from the salt, and the air has a certain bite to it that you only get in this part of Gujarat. The building itself is a simple structure, built to last against the harsh sun and the dusty winds. We don't have many trees for shade, so we stay inside the classrooms most of the day. The kids are used to the climate and they don’t complain much about the heat. We have a small staff of teachers who handle all the different grades and subjects. Sometimes one teacher has to cover two subjects if someone is out sick or traveling. It’s just how things are in a rural school like this. We have a main hall where we gather for morning prayers or when it’s time for final exams. The benches are old but we keep them repaired as best as we can with the tools we have. Most of the parents work in the salt pans, so they really value the time their children spend here in school. We follow the state board curriculum and try to keep up with the yearly schedule without falling behind. It’s a quiet life for the most part, punctuated by the sound of the school bell and the noise of kids playing during their lunch break.
