Our shop is Number 120 in the Ambaji Textile Market. If you’ve ever been to the market, you know how crowded and loud it can get with all the fabric traders and workers. Swaaddeshi Foods and Beverages was set up right in the middle of all that chaos. We figured people working in the textile trade need something good to eat and drink during their long shifts. We aren’t a big fancy cafe. It’s a small shop where space is tight. We serve tea, coffee, and various snacks throughout the day. The market opens early, so we have to be here before the first trucks arrive. It’s a lot of standing on your feet and dealing with people who are in a hurry. We don’t have any slick branding or corporate slogans. We just sell food and drinks. The name Swaaddeshi comes from our desire to keep things local and traditional. Most of our customers are the same faces we see every day. We know their orders by heart. It’s a hard life in the market, but there’s a good sense of community among the shop owners. We just try to provide a bit of refreshment to help everyone get through their workday. It's practical and it works for us. We don't have much to say other than we are here every day except for when the market is closed. It’s a simple living.
