Down in Bhogal Market, specifically at 42/A Masjid Lane, is where you’ll find us. Oriental Carpet Centre has been tucked away here for years. If you’ve ever walked down this lane, you know it’s a tight squeeze with all the stalls and people moving around. Inside, it’s mostly just piles of carpets reaching up to the ceiling. It’s a bit of a maze sometimes. We spend a lot of our time unrolling rugs for people to see the patterns or just moving things around to make more space. The lighting isn't the best, but you get a real feel for the wool and the knots when you’re right there on the floor. It gets pretty dusty, which is just part of the job when you deal with textiles all day. We aren't trying to be one of those high-end galleries you see in the expensive malls. This is a working shop. We know the regulars by name and we know which carpet has been sitting in the corner for too long. Sometimes we sit outside on a stool when the shop gets too cramped or hot. It’s a loud, busy area but we’ve gotten used to the noise from the market over time. Working here keeps us on our toes. We just focus on getting the rugs out to people who want them without making a big fuss about the whole process. It is just rugs and hard work.
