Meenakshi Boutique

Meenakshi Boutique is on the first floor of Nathusingh Markets in Vasant Kunj. It’s 7/A. You have to walk up some narrow stairs to find us. Once you’re inside, there’s fabric everywhere. Rolls of silk, cotton, and stuff with beads on it are just stacked up against the walls. It’s a bit of a mess sometimes, especially when we have three or four orders due on the same Saturday. We have a couple of tailors who sit in the back room with their machines going all day. That humming sound is just part of the shop. I spend my time measuring people or drawing out patterns on brown paper. It’s not like those big stores where everything is on a rack. Here, we talk about where the seam should go or how short the sleeves need to be. It gets hot in the afternoons but the big window lets in some light. Customers bring in their own ideas or photos from magazines and we try to make it work. Sometimes we run out of a specific thread and someone has to run out to the market to find it. It’s just the way we do things. We’ve got a small mirror in the corner for fittings and some old chairs for people to wait on. It’s a busy little place but we like the work.
