Amrita Carpets & Crafts

Amrita Carpets & Crafts is based in Lajpat Nagar-III, specifically at I-16. Our workspace is pretty much dominated by the carpets themselves. They are piled high in almost every room, and if you are not careful, you might trip over a corner of a rug sticking out. Moving these things is hard work and keeps us all pretty tired by the end of the week. The floors are mostly concrete because it is easier to slide the heavy rolls across them. We do not have a fancy showroom with spotlights. Instead, we just pull things out from the stacks when we need to look at them. The dust from the wool and fibers is everywhere, so we are constantly sneezing or dusting off our desks. It is a very hands-on job, and my hands usually feel pretty rough from handling the materials all day. We have a small kitchen area in the back where we keep a kettle and some biscuits. During the monsoon, the humidity makes the wool smell a certain way that you just get used to after a while. Most of our day is spent checking the quality of what comes in and making sure the labels are correct. It is basic, physical work that does not leave much time for sitting around or worrying about how the office looks.
