Up here in Sanawar, near Kasauli, the air is a lot thinner and the hills are steep. Our school has been sitting on this ridge for a very long time. It’s a bit of a hike to get around the different buildings because everything is on a slope. We have old stone buildings that have seen many winters. It’s a boarding school, so the kids are here all the time. They live in the dorms and eat in the mess hall. It feels more like a small village than just a school. The weather changes fast; one minute it’s sunny and the next the clouds are coming through the classrooms. We don't have the same noise as a city school, just the wind and the kids shouting on the playing fields. The staff mostly lives on the grounds too. We keep a tight schedule because that's how things work best in a place like this. There’s a lot of history in the walls, but we don’t talk about it much, we just live with it. We spend a lot of time making sure the heaters work and the roofs don't leak when it rains. It’s a quiet life away from the busy towns. We just focus on the students and the daily routine of mountain life. It’s a simple, hard-working place. We’ve had generations of families send their kids here, and we just keep doing what we’ve always done. It works for us.
