Our group operates out of House No 1 in Sobaibandh Karnai. This is Upendra Nath Yadav’s house, and if you know the Sukhpura area, you probably know where the village is. It’s a small place where everyone knows their neighbor. Most of us are from farming families that have been here for a long time. We decided to form this producer company because dealing with the market was getting too complicated for one person. Now we just handle the business ourselves right from the village. The office is really just a desk and a few chairs where we sit and drink tea while we look at the harvest numbers. It isn’t polished at all. Sometimes the kids are playing right outside while we are trying to count the bags of grain. We know this soil very well since we’ve worked it since we were young. It’s tough work, especially when the weather decides not to cooperate. We spend a lot of time talking to other farmers in Karnai about what they might need for the next season. It’s a lot of back and forth. We don’t have a big sign on the road, just the house where we meet. People know where to find us if they have questions about their crops. It feels better to work this way, as a group. We are just local people trying to get a fair price for what we grow. It’s a quiet life in Sukhpura, but we keep busy enough with the farm work and these meetings.
