Navodai Farmers Producer Company is out in Meja, specifically the Sirsa area in Amilahawa. If you’ve ever been to this part of the country, you know it’s all about the land. We are a group of farmers who decided to team up. It’s not some big investment firm from the city. We meet up in Amilahawa to talk about what’s going on with the soil and how we can get better results without spending a fortune. The sun gets really hot out here, so we usually get started very early in the morning before it becomes unbearable. Our office is just a small room with a fan that clicks and some benches for people to sit on. We spend more time on our feet than sitting behind a desk anyway. There’s always someone coming by with a problem or a suggestion. We don't use big words or fancy talk. We just discuss things like fertilizers, weather patterns, and where to sell the grain. It’s a basic life but it’s ours. We don't have a bunch of rules, just a mutual understanding that we are all in this together. Some days are better than others, and when the crop fails, we all feel it. But we keep going because that’s what farmers do. We just stay focused on the work at hand and try to help each other out.
