Our school is over in Veppanthattai, specifically in the Vengalam West part of Vengalam. It’s a quiet enough area where people mostly know their neighbors. The school building has been standing here for some time and it shows its age in a few spots, but it’s sturdy enough for us. We have several classrooms where we teach the older students from around the Vengalam region. It’s a high school, so the kids are a bit older and more independent. They come in on their bicycles or walk from the nearby houses every morning. We have a small staff room where we sit and plan the day’s work over a cup of tea. The grounds are mostly open space where the students hang out during their breaks. We don't have any fancy technology, just the standard tools for teaching. The wind usually blows across the fields nearby, which helps keep the rooms from getting too stuffy during the afternoons. Most of us who work here live in Vengalam ourselves, so we see the students and their parents at the market or around town. It’s a very local operation. We don't try to be anything we aren't; we just provide a place for the teenagers to learn their subjects and get ready for whatever comes next. The gate stays open until the last student leaves in the late afternoon. It’s a simple, honest way to spend the day in Veppanthattai. We just keep the school running.
