About Rishi Handicrafts – Art & Craft in Saharanpur
Rishi Handicrafts is a small place tucked away in Lane No. 7 of Samrat Vikram Colony. We are right off Chilkana Road. If you walk down the lane, you can usually hear the sound of tools and people working. We make things by hand here, which is a slow process but that’s how it has always been done. There are pieces of wood and fabric scattered around most of the time. It’s not the cleanest workshop you’ll ever see, but it’s where the work happens. We have a few local workers who have been with us for years. They know their craft well and don't need much instruction anymore. We don't have a big showroom or shiny displays. Most people find us through word of mouth or by just wandering into the colony. The space is a bit cramped because we have so many materials stored in the corners. It’s just how we operate. We spend our days cutting, carving, and putting things together. Sometimes a piece doesn't turn out quite right and we have to start over. That’s the nature of handmade work. We aren't interested in mass-producing things in a factory. We like the feel of the materials and the way things look when they are finished by a real person. Samrat Vikram Colony is a quiet place for the most part, which helps us focus on what we’re making. It’s a simple life and a simple business for us.
