Sagardwip Progressive Farmers Producer Company Limited is located down in Sagar, right where Ashis Kumar Mandal is. Being on an island like Sagardwip makes farming a bit different than on the mainland. We have to deal with the salt in the air and the way the tides affect everything. We got this group together to help the farmers here move forward. Ashutoshradhakrishnapur is a bit of a mouthful to say, but it’s home for us. Most of our time is spent figuring out how to get our produce across to the markets and making sure we have enough supplies for everyone. It’s a group effort. We don't always agree on every single thing, but we work it out over tea. Our setup is pretty basic. We use a lot of traditional methods because that’s what works in this soil. We aren't trying to be some huge industrial outfit. We just want to make sure the families here can keep their farms going for another generation. Sometimes the weather gets really rough, especially during the monsoon, and we all have to pitch in to save the crops. It’s a bit of a struggle sometimes, but there’s a good sense of community in Sagar. We’re just local people trying to make a living and keep the island’s farming tradition alive and well for our kids and the people who live here.
