Our little group, Maa-Vandevi Farmer Producer Companylimited, is basically just a bunch of neighbors working out of Umadevi and Harishankar Tiwari’s place in Khari. If you have ever been to Kesli here in the Sagar district, you know it’s not the busiest place in the world. Life moves pretty slow around these parts, and most of that life is spent out in the fields getting our hands dirty. We didn't really plan on starting a company in the beginning, but after talking over tea a few dozen times, it just felt like the right way to manage what we were growing together. We deal with whatever the season gives us, which some years is a lot and other years not so much at all. It's a lot of physical work, honestly. We spend a lot of time worrying about the monsoon or trying to find someone who can fix a pump when it decides to quit in the middle of a dry spell. The address is just a house, really, and that’s where we keep our records and meet up to talk about the prices in the mandi. We aren’t trying to be some big corporate thing with suits and ties. Most of us are more comfortable in our work clothes anyway. It’s just about getting the crops sold and making sure everyone has enough to get through to the next planting season. Sometimes we get things wrong, but we’re learning as we go. It is just a simple life here in Khari, and we are fine with that.
