We've been running the canteen over at SIMS College on Range Hills Road in Bopodi for a while now. Most days start pretty early because students are always hungry before their first classes even start. It gets loud and a bit chaotic around noon when everyone rushes in at once, but we've gotten used to the pace. We mostly just focus on getting the food out hot and making sure there’s enough for everyone. It’s not fancy work, just a lot of chopping, stirring, and serving. Sometimes we try out new things if the students ask for them, but usually, it's the staples that keep people coming back. The kitchen is small, so we have to stay organized. Being in a college setting keeps us on our toes because young people tell you exactly what they think of the food. We don't spend much time on decorations or anything like that. Our main concern is the kitchen and the counter. On weekends when the college is quieter, we catch up on cleaning and prepping for the next week. It’s a lot of standing on your feet all day, but seeing the same faces every day makes it feel like a community. We just do our job and go home. If you’re around Bopodi, you’ve probably seen the college gates. We’re right inside there, doing what we do every day. We don't ask for much, just hope everyone leaves full enough to get through the day.
