Raviwar Peth is one of those places where the streets feel like a maze, especially around Mount Joy Road. We are at number 1164, which is an old building that’s seen better days. The doorway is narrow and we have to be careful when moving the big boxes inside so we don’t scuff the walls. It’s mostly just a place for storage and taking orders over the landline. The phone is old and the ringtone is loud enough to wake the dead. We have a few desks pushed together in the middle of the room because the corners are full of stock. It gets a bit dark in here during the monsoon when the clouds are heavy. We usually have a radio playing in the background to keep things from being too quiet. Most of our neighbors are doing the same kind of thing, so there’s always a lot of shouting and horns honking outside. It’s the kind of place where you know exactly which floorboards are going to creak when you walk on them. We don’t really do much in terms of window dressing or making it look like a showroom. It’s a workspace through and through. Sometimes the delivery guys stay for a glass of water and tell us about the traffic on the highway. We just take things as they come, handling the paperwork and making sure the crates are labeled right before they go out the door.
