If you walk down towards the Old Dhor Bazar in Hadapsar, you’ll find us at Jai Malhar Dhanya Bhandar. We are located at Kankaria 19, right where the market gets real busy on the weekends. Our shop is basically filled from floor to ceiling with heavy gunny bags of grain and pulses. There is always a bit of dust in the air from the wheat and the bajra, which is just part of the job when you’re scooping out kilos for customers. We use these old metal scoops and a digital scale that sometimes flickers if the power is acting up. People come in looking for specific types of rice, and we have to remember which pile is which. It’s a lot of lifting and moving bags around, which keeps us pretty tired by the time we close up at night. The floor is concrete and has some cracks, and we’ve got a small wooden desk where we keep the ledger books to note down what’s been sold. Sometimes the pigeons try to fly in through the front, so we have to shoo them away. It gets quite loud with the traffic from the main road, but we’re used to it. We try to keep things simple and just focus on getting the right grain into the right bags for whoever walks in. It’s steady work, and we’ve seen the neighborhood change a lot over the years.
