About M. Y. Handicrafts – Art & Craft in North East Delhi
Maujpur is a busy part of town. Gali No. 2 is narrow, so if a rickshaw is coming through, you have to step into a doorway to let it pass. M. Y. Handicrafts is at 12A/50M in Jamalu Ka Bagh. It’s a bit of a maze back here, but the locals know where we are. The front door is just a plain wooden one that stays open most of the day to let some air in. Inside, it’s mostly shelves and workbenches. We don’t have a big sign outside, just a small one near the bell. The walls are covered in marks from moving boxes in and out over the years. It’s a bit cramped when we have a lot of stuff ready to go, but we manage. In the rainy season, the street gets a bit muddy, so we have to keep the floor clean. Most of the time, it’s just the sound of people working and the occasional vendor shouting outside in the street. We’ve been in this spot for quite some time now, and we’ve gotten used to the rhythm of the neighborhood. It’s not a fancy showroom, it’s just where the work happens. We drink a lot of chai and keep the fans going to stay cool. There is always someone coming or going, and the small space stays warm throughout the summer months. It is just a practical area where we spend our days.
