Saad Handicraft

Our workshop is over by Turkman Gate, right across from the Kala Masjid. It is a very crowded area with lots of history in the old walls. We make things by hand here. Usually, the sound of tools is the first thing you hear when you walk into the shop. There is dust and scraps of material everywhere because that is just how it is when you are actually working on something. It isn't a showroom like you would see in a big mall. It is where the actual making happens every single day. We’ve been at this address for quite some time now. Some of us even learned the trade from our fathers and uncles. The space is a bit tight, but we make it work for us. Customers come in through the narrow lanes of the old city. Sometimes we are very busy with a big order and other times it stays quiet for a few days. We do not really have a website or anything like that. People just know where we are located. Dealing with handicrafts takes a lot of patience and sitting down in one spot. We see many tourists passing by the masjid, but mostly we deal with the local traders. The lighting isn’t the best in the back room, but we know where everything is kept. It’s a simple life for us. We start early in the morning before the heat gets too bad. By evening, we are just wrapping up and cleaning the floor. It is honest work and it keeps us busy.
