Our shop is packed with rolls of cloth from floor to ceiling. It smells like fresh cotton and dye in here. We have been running things under the name Acharaj Ram Shambu Ram for a very long time, passing the work down through the family. We don't have air conditioning, just some old ceiling fans that push the air around while we show fabrics to customers. It’s a very loud market with people shouting and carts pushing past. We sit on the floor or on small stools most of the day. There isn't a lot of space to move around, so we have to be careful not to knock over the stacks of silk or linen. We keep our accounts in big handwritten books because that is how we have always done it. Sometimes the lights go out in the market and we have to use flashlights to see the colors of the thread. People come from all over to buy cloth here, and we enjoy the talk and the bargaining. It’s a very old way of doing business, but it works for us. We don't need a fancy office when we have all this history in the cloth market. It feels like home to us after all these years.
