Working at Plot No. 1980/2 on Loni Road is something else. This part of Shahdara is always humming with the sound of trucks and machinery. K L Rathi Steels Ltd. has been here for a while, and the place feels like home even if it is full of metal and dust. The sun hits the steel beams in the yard and it gets really warm by noon. We don't have fancy air conditioning in every corner, so we rely on big fans and open doors. Everyone here knows their job, from the guys moving the heavy loads to the people sitting in the small office area. Loni Road is a tough place to drive, especially with the potholes and the heavy vehicles, but it is the heart of the industrial area. We spend a lot of time checking the inventory and making sure the loads are ready for transport. There is a specific smell to a steel yard that you never really get out of your clothes. It is a mix of oil and iron. We eat our lunch together under the shade when we can find a quiet minute. It isn't a glamorous life, but we take pride in the stuff we handle. The gates open early and they don't close until the sun is well down. That is just the way we operate in Shahdara, keeping things moving without making a big fuss.
