The APMC Market-I in Vashi is a world of its own. Our office, G-1 2, is right in the middle of all that chaos. You have to walk past Bharati Jeweller and look for us across from Tak Hospital. It’s a loud place. There are always people shouting and loaders carrying heavy bags on their backs. Damodar Chakubhai Foodgrains has been a part of this market for decades. We don't have any fancy corporate offices. Our space is filled with samples of grain in little plastic bowls and stacks of old ledgers. We don't use computers for everything; sometimes a pen and paper are just faster. The air is always thick with the smell of dry grain and truck exhaust. We get used to it. We aren't here to be the most famous company. We just buy and sell grain. It's what our family has always done. We work long hours, especially during the harvest seasons. Lunch is usually something quick from a nearby stall. We don't have a mission statement or a fancy philosophy. We just try to be honest and get the weights right. If the market is down, we worry. If it’s up, we work harder. It’s a simple cycle. Most of our clients have been dealing with us for twenty years. That’s just how things are in the market. We just keep our heads down and do the daily work.
