Up here in Kukawal, which is part of Shahada in the Nandurbar district, we started this kisan manch. Hanumant Desale’s place is where we usually meet up to discuss our business. It is a small village and everyone knows everyone else. Most of us have been farming since we were children, so we know the soil around here pretty well. This company is just a way for us to pool our resources and try not to get squeezed by the bigger buyers in the city. It is not a fancy business at all. We do not have computers in every room or anything like that. We mostly talk about seeds, the rain, and the price of diesel for the tractors. Life in Nandurbar can be tough when the season does not go right. We all look out for each other when things get difficult. Sometimes we gather at the post office to wait for mail or just to talk about the village news. We are not looking to be the biggest company out there. We just want to make sure our families are okay and the farms stay in the family for the next generation. It is a lot of sweating under the sun and then coming back to Hanumant’s to write things down in the books. We do not use much corporate talk because it does not mean much to us in the field. We just do what needs doing every day.
