Jalshakti Farmer Producer Company is right on Dongargaon Road in Shahada. If you know the area, you know it is a practical spot for a group like ours. We are at number 23. It is basically just a room where we can sit down and figure out how to manage our water and our crops better. Shahada has a specific way about it, and the farmers here are tough people. We did not want to be at the mercy of middle-men anymore, so we put our names together on paper. It is not always easy. Some days we just sit and worry about the electricity for the pumps. There is usually dirt on the floor and some old chairs for when the neighbors stop by to ask about fertilizer. We don't have a receptionist or anyone in a suit. If someone is in the office, they probably just finished a shift in the field and have the mud to prove it. We keep our records in a few ledgers and try to make sense of the new rules they give us. The name Jalshakti sounds a bit grand, but really, it is just about making sure we have enough to keep the plants alive and the families fed. We share the costs of things and try to help each other out when a tractor breaks down or someone needs an extra hand. It is just how we live here on the road to Dongargaon.
