Yajman Public School

You can find us on the road that goes to Gonikoppa, right here in Periyapatna. We are part of the Mysore district, but it feels a lot more rural out here than in the city. The school is a place where local kids from the surrounding villages come to study. It’s a public school, so we get all sorts of students from different backgrounds. The main road can be quite noisy with trucks going toward the coast, but the school grounds are set back a bit. We have a simple building with white walls and a few trees around the yard. It gets very dusty in the summer months and we are always sweeping the floors. The teachers here work hard to get through the books every year. We don't have any fancy stuff like air conditioning or high-tech labs, just the basic classrooms and a few blackboards. People around Periyapatna know us because we have been on this road for a long time. Many of the parents went to school here themselves years ago. It’s a quiet life for the most part, except when the bell rings for lunch and everyone runs out at once. We spend our days grading papers and trying to keep the kids focused on their exams. It is a very practical place with no frills. We just try to keep the doors open and the classes running on time every single day.
