Vimal Gems

Being on the 3rd floor at 117 Kalbadevi makes for a lot of stair climbing every single day. Vimal Gems is located right across from Khara Kuwan, which is always a landmark for people trying to find us. Kalbadevi is a crowded place, and by the time you reach our floor, you’re usually glad for a chair. We deal with small things, so we spend a lot of our time hunched over desks with magnifying glasses and tiny scales. It’s quiet inside compared to the street noise down below. We have a couple of old fans that keep the air moving, and the light from the window is usually enough for most of the work. We aren't some high-end showroom with velvet ropes. It’s just a place where we sit and sort through what we have. Sometimes customers stay for an hour just talking while we work. We’ve been in this building for a long time, so we know all the other shopkeepers on the stairs. We drink a lot of coffee to stay sharp because the pieces we handle are so small you could lose them if you aren't paying attention. We don't have a fancy logo or anything. It’s just the name on the door. We show up, we do the work, and we go home. That’s been the routine for as long as I can remember. It keeps us out of trouble.
